2021 BMW 4 Series - Perfect Coupe!

Thanks: Borusan Oto

BMW's two-door 4-series differentiates itself from the 3-series sedan with a controversial new design and a more elegant roofline. Mechanically, the two cars are almost identical. They are powered by the same two powertrains: either a 255-hp turbocharged four-cylinder or a 382-hp turbocharged inline-six. While passenger space is obviously arranged differently inside the two-door 4-series, occupants are treated to the same basic interior design, layout, and features as in the four-door—and as fans of BMW's latest interior arrangement we're okay with that. BMW says the new 4-series will start rolling out this fall, when it will take on other premium two-door models such as the Audi A5, the Lexus RC, and the Mercedes-Benz C-class. Fans of the fastback 4-series Gran Coupe sedan or the high-performance M4 (both reviewed separately) will be happy to know that those models will continue to be offered.

What's New for 2021?
Everything. The 4-series finally catches up to the 3-series for 2021 with a clean-sheet redesign and bolder exterior styling. The 2021 4-series is scheduled to go on sale in October.

Starting at: $46,595

430i coupe - $46,595
430i convertible - $54,095
M440i xDrive coupe - $59,495
M440i convertible - $66,995

We haven't driven the new 4-series yet, but in our experience with the four-door 3-series models, the turbocharged inline-six in the M440i model will be the enthusiast's choice, but the nearly $13,000 price premium may turn off some buyers. That bump in price comes with a load of additional equipment though, in case you need more reason to justify the cost. The M440i comes standard with all-wheel drive, for one thing, and it's also outfitted with unique M Sport 18-inch wheels with run-flat tires, the M Sport suspension and rear differential, a rear spoiler, a faux-leather wrapped dashboard, and more. A convertible model is also offered but switching to the soft-top body style adds almost $8000 to the base price.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The same two overachieving engines offered in the 3-series will be available in the 4-series. Models designated 430i will be powered by a 255-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. An all-wheel drive example of the 330i sedan managed a brisk 5.2-second zero-to-60-mph time at our test track; we expect similarly peppy performance from the 430i. The M440i is powered by a silky-smooth turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six that gains an assist from a 48-volt hybrid system to make 382-hp—good for a 3.8-second zero-to-60-mph time in the M340i. Our short drive of prototype 4-series models in Munich revealed a very sporty driving experience, courtesy of retuned suspension, a more-aggressive steering calibration, a wider rear track, and a lower center of gravity. We're looking forward to track-testing the 4-series after it's officially unveiled to see how it stacks up against its main rivals, the Audi A5 and S5, the Mercedes C-class coupe, and the Infiniti Q60.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
The EPA hasn't released fuel economy estimates for the 2021 4-series lineup yet, but it should offer similar ratings as the 3-series. We expect highway fuel economy somewhere in the mid-30-mpg range for the 430i and high 20s for the six-cylinder M440i.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
Shoppers may not notice much difference between the cabins of the 4-series and the 3-series unless they're in the back seat. The dashboard layout, interior materials, and primary controls look to be identical to the four-door 3-series', although we noticed that the lower roofline in the 4-series gives it a less spacious feel. Trunk space is less generous here than in the 3-series, especially in the convertible model, which will likely give up some of its cargo room to provide stowage space for its power-folding fabric roof.

Infotainment and Connectivity
The 2021 4-series comes with the same standard 8.8-inch and optional 10.3-inch infotainment screens as the 3-series sedan. Both displays run the latest version of BMW's iDrive 7 infotainment software, which pairs an intuitive interface with a console-mounted clickwheel controller for easy use while driving; those who prefer to interact with the display directly can do since both are touchscreens. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and in-dash navigation will all be standard while a 12.3-inch digital gauge display, onboard Wi-Fi, and a wireless smartphone charging pad will all be optional extras.

Talha Mirza : It doesn't hit pedestrians, it swallows them whole.
SirenAlisa : Just got the 430i, this car looks gorgeous and drives like the ultimate driving machine. Some hate the grille, some love it, I love it! ❤️ BMW
Michael Woloszynowicz : I love how everyone despises the grill. I remember seeing this for the first time thinking how horrible it was and I'm glad I'm not the only one. Way to ruin an otherwise nice car. If you start putting this grill on all your models you can consider yourself out of business pretty soon.
2sweet2handle : I like the design of this car. Its just the grill that i dont like, its way too oversized. If it had the same grill as the new 8 series,i would have bought it
neonblack : I've been a huge bmw fanboy for decades, owned 4 of them, mostly coupes, loved e92 so much I bought it twice from new, just a perfection from any angle you look at it, super modern even for todays standards and pretty much timeless design.
I couldn't wait for a new coupe in 3 series size to come, I've been waiting for years and literally skipped f32 for this one to come. And now this abomination comes out, with the weight of SUV?!
I won't even go into horrific design of it, it's been stripped of all of BMWness, they even managed to destroy the side line and silhouette and even those perfect proportions, the car looks so wrong from all angles, what the heck?!
I'll just say f*******ck you BMW, you have lost me. Life is too short for waiting another 7 years just to be screwed in the end! You have had the most loyal customers and fanbase in a car industry by far and you are loosing it faster than you could ever imagine! Yeah, go and make more of 1 series Ford Focuses, it seems that's the only thing you are able to produce.
F*cking idiots!

BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe Review - Should You Buy One in 2022?

BMW's second-generation 4 Series Gran Coupe offers a more flexibly stylish choice in the profitable sector for premium-badged Gran Turismo-style mid-sized executive cars. For once, two rear doors don't compromise the visual appeal of a model of this kind, nor does their extra weight dilute the handling purity. Of course, there are more practical choices in this segment - and certainly cheaper ones. After trying this BMW though, you might not be quite so attracted to them. For brand enthusiasts, there's certainly plenty to like.

Market and Model

Sporty 'M Sport' trim is standardised this time round and prices start from around £40,000 for the entry-level 420i. There's a further £2,500 premium if you want the 420d diesel version - which can be had with xDrive 4WD for another £1,500 more. You're looking at around £45,000 for a 430i. And think in terms of around £55,000 if you want the M440i xDrive model.

As an option, there's an 'M Sport Pro' package which includes a special 'Sprint' function for additional bursts of speed and a sporty engine soundtrack in the cabin when the 'SPORT' driving mode is activated. Plus you get M sport brakes, 19-inch 'M light' alloy wheels, a rear spoiler in a high-gloss black, BMW individual high-gloss 'Shadowline' trim with extended features and BMW individual lights and M seat belts. You might also be interested in a browse through the M Performance Parts portfolio, from which you can order things like 20-inch M Performance forged light alloy wheels in a Y-spoke design with a Jet Black matt finish. Or maybe a carbon fibre finish for the front grille, front splitter and side skirts, as well as aero flicks for the front apron in high-gloss black.

Cost of Ownership

Mild hybrid technology has been included with all diesel engines and with the straight-six petrol unit of the flagship BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupe. Fitting a 48V starter-generator and second battery greatly increases the scope for utilising Brake Energy Regeneration and the electrical power it produces. The recuperated energy collected by the 48V battery can be supplied to the 12V electrical system or used for generating additional drive power when fed back to the 48V starter-generator. When the car is accelerating, the generator is also able to offer the driver an electric boost effect that instantly makes an extra 11hp available.

All of which should promise a competitive set of efficiency stats, though they're way down on what you'd get from an identically-engined 4 Series 2-door Coupe. We'll start with the petrol models. The 420i manages up to 42.8mpg on the combined cycle and up to 150g/km of CO2. For the 430i version, the figures are up to 41.5mpg and up to 156g/km. For the M440i xDrive, the figures are up to 35.3mpg and up to 181g/km. What about the diesels? For the 420d, the official figures are up 58.9mpg and up to 126g/km. For the 420d xDrive version, it's up to 55.4mpg and up to 133g/km.

One great car can create many such models. Certainly, there seems to be an almost never-ending series of ways that BMW can use the underpinnings of their segment-defining 3 Series saloon to suit ever-changing customer preferences. Here perhaps, in this good looking second generation 4 Series Gran Coupe, we have the most appealing example yet of what this Munich maker can do in the mid-sized executive segment.

Not all cars that claim to be 'coupes' are stylish enough to really deserve that title - particularly those that must also accommodate two rear passenger doors. This improved Gran Coupe though, wears its badge credibly yet still offers enough practicality to justify its existence. Overall, if you're looking at buying a conventional premium badged mid-sized executive model, you may well not already have this Gran Coupe on your wish list. If so, then perhaps it ought to be. After all, just for once, the kind of car you've dreamed about may also need to be the one you really need to choose.

David Perry : I think this Gran Coupe from a styling point of view is more attractive than the elongated look of the 2 door coupe plus of course it has a far more practical rear seat access.
